Just Grapes (462 Dagu Lu)

China isn’t known for its wines but apparently it is one of the largest producers of wine - just not the kind we all know and love - more table wines. So, getting a good glass of cabernet sauvignon is a little harder and a lot more expensive. Luckily, on Dagu Rd, the street bordering our complex, is a little place you can go to enjoy a good glass of wine and a nice little meal - Just Grapes. I had walked by this place many times over the last 3 weeks but hadn’t gone in yet, that is until yesterday when James, Samantha and I met up with another couple we were introduced to via email. It just so happens they are part owners of Just Grapes. So, this review may be a bit biased, but I really enjoyed it.
Just Grapes receives 4 cookies from me. The first floor is reminiscent of Best Cellars in Boston (I’m sure it’s in other cities too, but I remember it from Boston). A wide variety of wines are laid out and organized by flavor and taste rather than by region or type. First they’re broken down by rich or smooth, then fruity, woody, etc… makes for even the least experienced wine drinker to find the right wine.
Then upstairs is a cool little lounge that can seat about 60 or so, I’m guessing. It’s a great place to hold a private party, corporate events or even a baby shower. Unfortunately, it was a bit empty, but that’s probably because Just Grapes has only been open 6 months and it was a dreadfully rainy day. We had pizza, pasta and wine… I forgot the name of the wine but it was a nice fruity white that went well w/our food. And the conversation was great. We had a great time. The food was great, the atmosphere was great, and the service was great. I may be writing my blogs from there with a glass of wine since they have free wifi there and it’s only 1 min away from our door.
