Community Blood Drive- One SH Mama’s personal story

I was thrilled arriving at the hospital that sunny September morning to give birth excited that I would finally be getting to meet my precious baby. I was the picture of health, a low risk pregnancy. I didn’t even think twice about signing the admission documents that I consented to a blood transfusion in the event of emergency. Those sort of situations happened to other women, many years ago in another place and another time, not to a healthy woman like me in the year 2005.

Little did I know, earlier that day that the selfless act of giving blood, as so many did, would ultimately save my life. I would not be here alive today had I not received 10 units of life saving, disease free blood after the birth of my youngest daughter.

My two young daughters would be without a mother, my husband without a wife.

If you are able, please donate to the Community Blood drive organized by Shanghai Red Cross Blood Center, in conjunction with Shanghai United Family Hospital.

Please contact Rachel Wu at rachel.wu@ufh.com.cn or 5133 1968 to register or to find out more information.

Those with blood type of Rh negative (more commonly found within the expatriate community) are particularly encouraged to donate.

I don’t believe you are eligible to donate if you are pregnant or nursing (which leaves many of us Mamas out!), but please donate if you are weaned or in between babies-encourage your husband and everyone you know. It could potentially save one of our children, our spouses or our friend’s lives.

Remember, when blood is needed, in many instances it is needed immediately and can be the difference between life and death in a matter of minutes. Together we can all make a difference and make Shanghai a safer place to live in as Expatriates.

Those involved in the campaign will receive corporate membership benefits at SHU for one year. Please contact Rachel for details.
