Baby Jay–Baobei

By Victoria Hazel-Boland

Baby Jay, an orphan from Henan, has arrived at Shanghai
Children’s Medical Center this morning. He was quickly admitted into
the NICU. He is only 9 days old. His treatment will need to start
right away to try to get rid of his brain hematoma, then the 2nd stage
is to see if he would need a shunt placed……

Please let me introduce to you the Baobei foundation, for those of you
Mamas that may not be familiar with it. It is a charitable
organization, and as per the founding “Mamas” mouths:

“We are an organization working with Shanghai locals & expatriates
and international businesses to raise funds and volunteer support. We
work with Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (”SCMC”)to provide
neurogical surgeries & GI (gastrointestinal ) surgeries and after-care
to Chinese orphans.”

It is a relatively new organization, and I have had the honor and
privilege to be a volunteer with an amazing group of women, all much
like yourselves, expatriate wives and Mamas. The website is still
under construction, but you can view the blog at
www.baobeifoundation.org/stories. The stories of some of these babies
are simply amazing. These young infants display such strength and
courage as they struggle to survive in this world, not only without
the love of a Mommy or Daddy, but also attempting to overcome life
threatening complications and illnesses.

Currently, we have just received a 9 day old baby boy from Henan
Province
, (as described above) an orphan suffering from a brain
hematoma. He arrived at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center and is
under care in the NICU. We are still attempting to collect the funds
to cover his surgery. We assume the first stage of treatment would be
around 20,000RMB and we have so far raised 4630rmb. We are still
15370rmb short. If you would like to contribute to this precious baby,
please contact me. No amount is too small (or too big!!:-). I promise
you that is an absolute honor to help these precious little ones in
any way that you can.

If financial gifting is not within your means, why not consider
volunteering to visit these babies in the hospital? If you are
interested in doing this, I can put you in contact with the right
person. Most of these babies arrive from the orphanage with an Ayi who
is at their side at all times. We Mamas can help by holding these
babies, giving some special TLC and a much needed rest to Ayi! Ayi
also appreciates any snacks, noodles, drinks.,etc. If you’ve ever
spent any time at SCMC, you can understand how little things like this
can make a world of difference and thereby ensures the best care as
possible for these babies.
